We see negotiators like Senator Richard Lugar under attack by the Tea Party, as well as longtime Senator Orrin Hatch. The Tea Party took out the more moderate candidate in the Nevada Senate race and replaced her with the idiot Sharon Angle, who was subsequently defeated. This occurred in Maryland as well with the idiot Christine O'Donnell, who was also defeated. This was also attempted in Alaska by Joe Miller defeating Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary.
Americans are more divided now in their political beliefs and each side has created its own information network (MSNBC and liberal blogs and FOX and conservative/right wing blogs). This helps to polarize the debate.
As for the economy, with the demise of manufacturing jobs, unions have been crushed. Unions are attempted in retail stores and the most interesting thing to look at with regards to how the corporate leadership negotiates with them is to see the propaganda that all new employees are required to watch, which demonizes those unions. Both parties need to be strong or weak for there to be a negotiation, when one side is weak and the other strong, then there is not negotiation, just shitty terms for the weak and good terms for the strong.
