I'm a big The Thing fan. Seen the original black and white and seen the 1982 version. The black and white sucked by the way. The 1982 version was awesome.
The 2011 version was not awesome and I was tempted to give it a thumbs down when the ending was close. The 1982 version had good characters, and you liked the characters. The white cowboy pilot was likeable, the black bald guy was likeable and he had his eccentricities too. A lot of the 82' characters actually had personalities. In the 11' version practically no one had a personality. Most of the entire cast were just generic Swedes, with little distinction among them. Even the new black guy (who is also a B actor) also had very little personality, despite him having played very eccentric roles in the past. The girl, who was the main character had little personality, she was nothing more than mentally sharp but fearful.
The plot was fairly awful and confusing and I still don't fully understand some parts of the plot, like why one guys titanium bone brace was outside of his body. Nor is it clear how the thing killed people X, Y, Z. The Thing just got people without explanation. That was one of my biggest problems with the movie.
In 82' version, there was really one just one guy who the thing got to and you didn't understand how. In this version nearly every one the thing got, you didn't see it get them.
I did not like the recreation room scene where idiots were just taken down by the Thing as they bumbled about. I did not like the Things tentacle attack which could just pierce your body and take an organ out. It just seemed too easy. Even the Thing should have to do a little work to get a kill.
The good things about the film:
* Credit for being an origin story or prequel
* Credit for going inside the Things space ship while it was starting up (which also made no sense by the way, since if it could start up, why get out of it and freeze in the first place)
* Credit for the final plot twist with earing guy
* Credit for letting the girl live
One last criticism: they could have given us a little background on the Thing. Where'd he come from? What's his race like? What's his original form? If the Thing had actually talked, and gloated like I thought he would, that would have been pretty cool.
