Can the Democrats pass a budget that covers next year so they don't have to pass one with the new Republican House? I hope so.

"When I entered Republican politics during an earlier period of malaise, in the late seventies and early eighties, the movement got most of the big questions -- crime, inflation, the Cold War -- right. This time, the party is getting the big questions disastrously wrong."
"In the aftershock of 2008, large numbers of Americans feel exploited and abused. Rather than workable solutions, my party is offering low taxes for the currently rich and high spending for the currently old, to be followed by who-knows-what and who-the-hell-cares. This isn't conservatism; it's a going-out-of-business sale for the baby-boom generation."
- David Frum, former speech writer for George W. Bush
"This is just ridiculous. I never thought as an economist I would have to spend so much time doing political analysis."
- Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial
I hope so too, and with a much reduced deficit, but I will not be holding my breath!
I think that the stimulus has been calculated into the deficit, so just by the sheer fact that it's over, will make the deficit go down.

I believe projections have the deficit over $1 trillion until 2012, and not much less than $1 trillion then. I lean left socially, but fiscally not so much...even the $400-$500 billion deficits from a few years ago are too much for my tastes given the overall debt levels. So getting it started down is good, but I would like to see us be much more aggressive and reduce it sharply.
Another part of the debt is the drop in tax receipts due to the recession. I think that some cuts to the military should be made. The US' air transport fleet is too large and I think we should consider getting rid of a carrier battle group (the US already has 11).
