At least six people have been killed after security forces opened fire on pro-democracy protesters gathered outside a mosque in the Syrian city of Deraa on Tuesday, according to news reports citing witnesses.

Hundreds of protesters had reportedly gathered outside the Omari mosque in Deraa earlier on Tuesday in an attempt to prevent security forces from storming the mosque. The mosque has been the main the center of the anti-government protests since they began in the city on Friday.

The latest developments come after four people were killed on Friday when security forces opened fire on protesters in Deraa on Friday. A day later, another person was killed in police firing on mourners at two of the victim's funerals.

Further, one 11-year-old boy died of tear-gas inhalation on Monday after police cracked down on protesters demanding the dismissal of government officials involved in Friday's police firing. Rights activists say at least ten people have been killed in clashes between protesters and security forces across Syria since the unrest began.

The protesters are demanding an end to the country's 48-year-old emergency law and greater political freedoms. Such protests were rare in Syria until recently, as they are banned under emergency laws in place since 1963.

But several Syrian cities, including capital Damascus, Deraa and Banyas, have witnessed such protesters in recent days, following the successful uprisings against autocratic regimes in Tunisia and Egypt earlier this year.

Some things here are sounding reminiscent of Egypt:

Massive protests after weekly prayers at the mosques
People saying they have no fear of the regime anymore
Public funerals, which turn into protests

In the 19th century, after Napoleon besieged rebels in a mosque and bombarded it, he doomed his control over the country.
