Religion generally motivates humble people to become even better people. In that way religion is analogous to a wholesome food. Religion has the potential to motivate evil people to change. In that way religion is analogous to a medicine. But Religion also has the potential for abuse in the hands of all people. In that way religion is like a tool that may be used for good or for evil depending upon the person who wields it.

Because most people have propensities that vary between meekness and evil, religion is perhaps abused to hurt more often than it is utilized to bless. That’s a reason the World would be better off if every government (at EVERY level) could be officially operated without religious interference.

(Governments operating under religious interference are not the same as governments operating with humble religious people. The World would be a generally better place than it is if the former were totally eliminated--but with more of the latter than ever before seen throughout its history.)
