View Full Version : Most of the World Opposes Israeli Settlements

A story from several months ago:

The US has vetoed an Arab resolution at the UN Security Council condemning Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories as an obstacle to peace.

All 14 other members of the Security Council backed the resolution, which had been endorsed by the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). It was the first veto exercised by the Obama administration which had promised better relations with the Muslim world.

A Palestinian official said the talks process would now be "re-assessed". Washington was under pressure from Israel and Congress, which has a strong pro-Israel lobby, to use its veto. The Obama administration's decision risks angering Arab peoples at a time of mass street protests in the Middle East, the BBC's Barbara Plett reports from the UN.

It had placed enormous pressure on the Palestinians to withdraw the resolution and accept alternatives, but these were ultimately rejected. Nearly half a million Jews live in more than 100 settlements built since Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. They are held to be illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.

While stating that it opposed new settlements, the Obama administration argued that taking the issue to the UN would only complicate efforts to resume stalled negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians on a two-state peace deal. "Unfortunately, this draft resolution risks hardening the positions of both sides," said the US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice.

The resolution, sponsored by at least 130 countries, declared Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories were illegal and a "major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace".
...
Britain, which voted in favour of the resolution, called on Israel and the Palestinians to resume talks because of the gravity of the stalemate between the two sides.

Referring to recent events in Egypt and other Arab states, Foreign Secretary William Hague said the parties involved should not be "diverted by events in the wider region from working towards a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict".

"I call on both parties to return as soon as possible to direct negotiations towards a two-state solution, on the basis of clear parameters," he added.

It's really amazing when you think about it. The one thing that countries ranging from Britain to China to Brazil to Russia to India have in common is that they recognize that Israel's colonization on Palestinian lands is wrong and is preventing peace in the region. I think Obama knows it too, but the political support for giving blank checks for Israel is just too powerful and it would destroy Obama's ability to get re-elected and damage his ability to govern if he signed on and made it unanimous.

Why do 130 countries and 14 of the 15 members of the UN Security Council say that Israel's colonization is wrong?

The feeling is not mutual.

Your support of the Taliban is disgusting. Your support of Pakistan and opposition to India is based on nothing but a lowly form of discrimination against all other religions in favor of Islam. Likewise your opinion on Iran is not based on any reason whatsoever, just once again you offer them unconditional support because they are Muslim. Your support of Obama and supposed support of Civil Rights reveals the extent of the hypocrisy in your beliefs: the civil rights are all about equality, but all of your comments that I've listed here are all about the inequality of putting Muslims above everyone else. These opinions of yours which hold the banner of equality while being nothing more than religious discrimination is sheer hypocrisy and dishonesty. The support you give for the most abominable governments (Iran) and organizations (the Taliban) on the planet is disgusting.

I would just as soon have the support of the Ku Klux Klan as to have your support.
